The good news is that premiums for young adults and college student health insurance are very attractive, even for plans which feature such desired benefits as co-pays for doctor visits and prescriptions. For example, very often we can find young adult and student health insurance with a $1000 deductible and 100% coverage after that deductible is met. We can eliminate the 80/20 co-insurance that dominates most plans and which usually adds thousands of dollars to your out of pocket risk.Give Vincent K. Often parents choose the college student health insurance plan offered through the college or university itself, or buy other "student" policies being offered on the Internet or elsewhere. I really advise against this, or at least urge you to consider a more permanent option. Remember, when you purchase "student" coverage the coverage ends when your child is no longer a student! What if your child has no other health insurance upon graduation and has developed an illness or suffered an injury that prevents them from getting coverage?
If you had purchased your own plan for your child, they would still be protected because graduation is no longer an issue.
One more warning: Sometime colleges “bury” college student health insurance charges within other charges on your invoice. It pays to read such invoices carefully because you don’t want to pay for something you don’t need if you decide to purchase your own college student health insurance plan.
